30 day Challenge #6

Frozen 8x10 Oil
The first picture is the photo I worked from. I decided where the sun was going to come from so I worked on the sky with a dot system of pale blue ,pink, and yellow. then I later covered it with white x's. Then I blocked in the basic colors.I kept blocking in on the third photo. Then I started working on the trees and the cattails. I feel I achieved the frozen look of the water and  I especially like the sky. The photo is a little dark but again I photographed at night, so this will have to be rephotographed.

30 paintings in 30 days

Whew! Nine hours on this 11x14 LAKE MORAINE, Alberta.  It was done in a paintalong with Johannes Vloothuis.I had to quit on it last night as he wore my out. He painted from 1pm to 9:30. I quit at 7 and just watched. I learn so much. Mine is quite different from his. I used different colors and improvised this morning for another two hours. He was working on a 20x24 I believe . At any rate I am happy with it.
Now to get some other things done before the snow storm sets in! And plan tomorrow's painting which will be much smaller.

30 Paintings in 30 days #4

#4 Sunset Swamp 5x7 Oil
I completed this last night and of course it is hard to photo at night. I wanted to get ahead as I am busy today with a 5 hour seminar with my favorite teacher, Johannes Vloothuis, http://www.improvemypaintings.com.
I chose this little canvas panel....a mistake as it had been gessoed thickly and of course I could not get the smoothness of the water. I really like  those smooth panels to work on but they are pricey. I did not do a value study as the photo already had it. I changed a few lines to be more melodic. The sun spot was in the right location and the light was already there so just went ahead and blocked in the main colors and then did the detail. This would be a fun one on a larger panel. Also I have taken to doing an acrylic wash on my canvases to prevent the paint from soaking in. I really should get some shellac like Marc Hanson uses to seal my canvas boards. Will look into that.....I am learning a lot with all this painting, such as what kind of support I like to paint on, what colors I prefer, and being prepared the previous day as to what I am going to paint and getting it all together.
I will be working on my newsletter today and hopefully the new website. I spent a good deal of time yesterday watching videos on how to set it up.
I must go to the grocery as we are to get 6-10 inches of snow tonight and tomorrow and then the temps will plunge to below zero and I am getting low on catfood, and birdseed and a few other items. Until tomorrow...remember....."No mistakes, only lessons!" and keep painting.

30 paintings in 30 days #3

Possibilities 8x10 Oil
I am having trouble photographing these paintings. The ipad does the best job. But the glare from the wet paint is a problem. These will all have to be rephotographed. This is from a photo from Johannes Vloothuis. He did the demo in pastel and gave us the video to watch. I have not had time to watch it but decided to paint the picture. Since it was -4 degrees with about 6 inches of snow, I was in the mood.  Again I blocked in the main colors. I was inspired by the warm light and the warm trees. I love the composition. The photo did not have a lot of sunlight so again I improvised and put a little mystery into it.
I still have not had time to organize my photographs on the computer or work on my website. It seems I just have time for chores and painting, photographing, uploading and Photoshoping for this challenge.

Happy Goat #2

Painting #2  Happy Goat....I just loved the way he was "smiling" The background is a little pale but it does make him stand out.  I really to pick something easier for tomorrow!
I blocked in all the colors and began to pick out the details. His left eye was the focal point for the composition. I did change the sky and background as the top of his head blended with the sky and the one treeline matched up with his brown patch. I attemped to make the background have many planes, tried to make the treeline melodic.Made the planes with varigated color. Now  to clean up my pictures, post today's paintingWatch a webinar. Right now on making my new website.

#1 of the 30 day challenge

This is the first painting of the New Year and the first painting of the 30 day challenge. I have never completed a 30 day challenge but I will this time.

Hope you had a wonderful Holiday and Hope the New Year will find you happy, healthy, safe and prosperous!

I was intrigued by these sheep in the Malabar Farm pasture. I decided it would be a morning painting so I warmed the sky on the right and for some reason was fascinated by their little stubby tails in the morning light and that was my focal point.. I did the sky first then blocked in the grass and the dark shadows on the sheep. Then I began adding color to the pair. 3/4 of the way through when I looked in the mirror, I felt it needed something more and added a third sheep.
I will start another painting and work on my new website which seems to be difficult for me to learn. Then I must organize my photos on my computer as it is taking too long to find the pictures I want to paint.
Happy New Year.  Judy
