New York Central Park watercolor and pastel

NY Central Park 12x16 watercolor/pastel

This was done on Saturday March 8. I have used pastel on watercolor before but not in this fashion and I love the effects. This is large for me but I do think I will frame it.I may work on it some more as the lines do not look straight but it may be the photo and not the painting. I do think I would like to attempt it in oils, also.
I am so looking forward to nicer weather so I can get out into the light and photo better.
Morning Glow 9x12 watercolor

This painting sold this week and I also have two pet portrait commissions, so will be working on those.

Last evening we had another Spirited Painting Party. We had some no shows but went ahead with the three who showed up. We had a great time and hope to have many more of these at Henne's Drafting and Art Supply. 419-522-4401. We have done these for private parties in their homes or larger facilities. I will be working on some new paintings to do for this.

Tabby Cat

Fixed that hard line on the left below his face, thanks to a remark from a friend. Much happier with this painting now.
Thanks to my son, my laptop is now free of those virus/bar control things and it is so much easier to post. Now I can get back to my newsletter, painting , etc.And thus, post my blog everyday. And best of all can post new paintings on my website which hasn't been done since the computer crash.
Today I will also be doing a paintalong with Johannes Vloothuis so I need to get my board ready. He will be doing a pastel, I believe but I will be doing an oil. My palette is a mess so that needs cleaned up and some clove oil added to my Palette Garage as I noticed the paints are getting hard, so that needs cleaned up and replenished before I can paint.
It is seven degrees here! Hard to even think about Plein Air Painting. I did get my copy of Plein Air yesterday and have been reading the articles and that helps.so.....
I will be back posting about how I start paintings, what inspires me and the process.

Zinnias and Holly paintings

Reworked this little 5x7 . I was unhappy with the background that I had originally painted in all that olive green so did some knife work on it.. A much better painting now.

After watching a webinar by Linda Kemp I attempted some negative painting in watercolor. Old habits continue! Found my self painting positively so had to redirect myself. It got darker than I wanted so had to scrub out the one corner. I love Strathmore's Gemini paper!

This is a work in progress. The plan is to not overwork it! Wish I would have left some white in the upper middle left! Still trying to come up with a Christmas painting for a Christmas card.

This weekend Northlight is giving 50% off everything so I ordered Linda's book Simplified Design and Color for Artists and also her Negative Painting Techniques for Acrylic. At $15 each and no shipping. I can use these in my classes.

I also signed up for Johnnes Vloothuis's three week online webinar for $11!

I am bummed as will miss part of Saturdays webinar as I have to judge a  gingerbread house contest at Kingwood Center at 2 pm and buy poinsettias for my classes next week and the greenhouse at Kingwood doesn't open until 3pm. Everything happens at the same time around the holidays. At least the webinar will be available to download for free for whoever signs up. He is going to paint the Grand Canyon in oil on Saturday.

Grapes

This was done to show my class before we started working on Yupo paper. I did this over about three times to get it better. That is the fun thing about Yupo. Don't like it, wipe it! Fun!This was done with watercolor.

Yupo Leo

Since I have spent many hours campaigning for my daughter who is running for Financial Director for my city I have not been painting as much. This painting of my cat Leo was done earlier. It was fun to work on the Yupo and I plan to do more of it. My cats inspire me and I am currently working on an oil of my cat who passed away recently.

I did this watercolor before I went to the workshop last week. It is from a photo of the hen house from the first workshop. I got good remarks from Fred Graff and he recommended a few minor changes. I really like the colorful vibrancy.

Lily pads, a work in progress

I like the way this is turning out. I have the other side of the pond to do and do more work on the water and under the lily pads. I have some spots in the water that are spaced too evenly and same size. The water needs to be much darker for contrast but it is turning into one of my calm and serene paintings. That is what I am striving for.

Spring at the Farm

When you put them all together I like the watercolor the best, bright color, dramatic value. The last oil is the finished oil. The photo shows too much white due to wet paint. I will have to look at it awhile. I guess not too bad for the first time outside this year with the oils...still attempting to work the easel, paints, carrying it all, plus been reading too much on color and am confusing myself, both in oil and watercolor!

WETLAND GOLD

This is the final photo...am not taking the frame apart again! Had to print my name darker so it would show up. It will go to get juried this month.

water lillies in progress

I am getting excited about this one...I worked from my photo , put the lily pads in in pencil and then just went with my imagination. I didn't like the top half of the photo so I will need to improvise the back of the pond. Tomorrow I help hang the Beauty and the Beef show and that will take half a day...I may be too tired to lift a brush.

Watercolor plein air farm

This was my first attempt at watercolor plein air. I may rework this. Very challenging. Very windy and hot so everything dried up fast..my painting partner says it looks more like an oil and I should just keep doing oils. I don't think it was half bad.The tree line at the distant hill is too dark and the pines somewhat dark and I have lost that transparent watercolor feel. Maybe just paint another and see how it goes.

Wetland Gold, and others

I have been working on this for about a week, even took it in and out of the frame about six times and may have to again if the photo isn't good. I wish I could just say to some one Frame it this way! and then I wouldn't have to do it...but it is costly to have it done. I got permission from the photographer to use the photo and added the ducks...it is a little different from the photo but close enough I needed permission.
